My kids refer to this as “the book that makes mom cry.” I read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane to my firstborn (and cried), my son read it in school (and loved it), and then came home and read it to my other son. Now I can’t wait to read it to my youngest. The story is beautiful and delicate, and miraculous. DiCamillo’s books can be sad, but they are always transformative and deeply and profoundly moving. They give the reading time that parents and kids’ unforgettable feeling won’t want to let go.

Who Is the Real John Wick?

With the third and final installment of the John Wick saga in theatres, fans can be forgiven for thinking that the unbeatable Wick could in no way be based on a real life figure. And while it’s true that the script is an original conception by script writer Derek Kolstad, the spark that grew into the flame that is John Wick can be found buried deep within the trivia section of the John Wick IMDB page:

“The story is loosely inspired by an incident in Texas involving former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, who wrote Lone Survivor, about his fire-team's ordeal during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan in 2005. Luttrell was given a yellow labrador puppy, whom he named DASY, after the members of his fireteam.

On April 1, 2009, at about 1:00 a.m., Luttrell was awakened by a gunshot, and saw four men drive away. DASY was dead in his yard from a gunshot wound. He armed himself with two 9 mm Beretta pistols and chased the men through four counties in his truck until police apprehended them. They taunted Luttrell, threatened to kill him, and indicated no remorse for their actions. They were later sentenced for animal cruelty. Luttrell stated later, "I spared them, because I've killed enough people already."

So yes, it would appear that John Wick is mostly a fabrication, but there’s a hint of truth behind every story that’s make belief!

Action Packed Movies and the Books They’re Based on

2019 and 2020 are set to be great years for action movies, and some of the most anticipated releases are actually based on some thrilling, critically acclaimed books. Here are two of the films we can’t wait to see, and the books they’re based on.

Scheduled for release in August this year, The Informer is set to be a thrill from start to finish. Starring Rosamund Pike, Joel Kinnaman, Clive Owen, and several notable others, the NYC set story actually takes its inspiration from 3 Seconds by Anders Roslund & Borge Hellström, a Swedish duo. Originally set in Stockholm, with scenes in Denmark and Poland, the book is a Scandinavian crime thriller that switches between several characters including a police detective, a criminal who has become a double agent, and a public prosecutor.

Despite some production delays pushing its release date up to 2020, Greyhound is set to be nothing short of epic. The wartime drama will star Tom Hanks and Elisabeth Shue, and while it’ll definitely tug at your heartstrings it also promises action packed battle scenes and heroics. Based on The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester, which has actually been adapted in the past, it tells the tale of U.S. Navy captain Commander Krause, who is caught in the events of World War II during the Battle of the Atlantic. Krause is forced to battle not just enemy forces, but his own past and insecurities.

Adapted into a major motion picture of the same name in 2015, In The Heart Of The Sea tells the tale of the loss of the Whaleship Essex in the Pacific Ocean in 1820 after an unfortunate encounter with an enraged sperm whale. Left with nothing but 3 small whaleboats and limited supplies, the 21 surviving seamen braved the 2,000 mile journey to safety.
