While DC may occasionally stumble and struggle with quality, Marvel has taken the world by storm, producing content that grosses billions of dollars between their own studio and licensed studios like Sony and Fox. Unsurprisingly, their success has inspired many other studios to undertake their own comic book adaptations, and even to create some original superhero content. Initially thought to be a fad, it looks like the superhero may just be here to stay.
The Netflix effect. There’s no denying the effect that Netflix has had on physical formats like DVD and BlueRay, but a surprising consequence of the Netflix revolution has been its effect on content. With more Netflix originals out than ever before, competing streaming services like Amazon have entered the game of original content, while HBO has been at it all along. The result has been action-packed productions that are faster and cheaper to make but still high in quality with a wide ranging reach.
Diversity. A long overdue change in the world of action and adventure has been a slow shift from the stereotypical white male action star to a more diverse array of heroes. Films like Black Panther and Wonder Woman have certainly advanced this trend while cashing in on it, and upcoming films like Captain Marvel will only continue the trend into the future.
