Amazing Adventure Novels set in the Desert

Remote, isolated, and desolated: there really is no better setting for an adventure than a desert. Here are some of the best books curated by the Actionny review team that feature desert adventures.

Dune by Frank Herbert

The first installment of the Dune series, Dune is an interstellar adventure that revolves around several different noble houses battling to control the desert island Arrakis, upon which the coveted spice mélange resides.

Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey

An autobiographical work, Desert Solitaire is American writer Edward Abbey’s account of his experiences in the southwestern United States — a region that remains largely swathed in desert.

The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers

An adventure novel that functions in the guise of spy fiction, The Riddle of the Sands is a fantastic example of how a regular yachting trip might quickly become a madcap investigation of the German’s plan to invade Britain. Plus, it’s perhaps one of the first modern thrillers ever written.

Great adventure books no matter your age

If you are looking for some great adventure books for everyone in your family, take a look at these curated by the Actionny review team.

Squirm

by Carl Hiaasen

Carl Hiaasen is at it again with the elaborate antics of Billy Dickens, who you should know “isn’t the type to let things go.” Like the mystery of his father, who left when Billy was four. Billy lives in Florida with his mom, but after he stumbles across his dad’s Montana address, he doesn’t hesitate. He’s on a plane, trekking a mountain, cruising down a river — you know, the usual modes of transportation. It’s not all fun and games (though it’s a lot of fun and games) when Billy gets to his destination and makes an unexpected discovery. But after that adventure, how scary can a stepsister be?

The White Stag

by Kate Seredy

Kate Seredy was an artist before she started writing award-winning children’s books and her gift for illustrating is on display in The White Stag. This compelling short story moves quickly and delivers a powerful and almost mystical retelling of the Huns and the Magyars and their travels westward after the elusive white stag. My sons loved listening to the tale of two brothers, and the illustrations were a bonus.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

by Kate DiCamillo, illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline

My kids refer to this as “the book that makes mom cry.” I read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane to my firstborn (and cried), my son read it in school (and loved it), and then came home and read it to my other son. Now I can’t wait to read it to my youngest. The story is beautiful and delicate, and miraculous. DiCamillo’s books can be sad, but they are always transformative and deeply and profoundly moving. They give the reading time that parents and kids’ unforgettable feeling won’t want to let go.

Who Is the Real John Wick?

With the third and final installment of the John Wick saga in theatres, fans can be forgiven for thinking that the unbeatable Wick could in no way be based on a real life figure. And while it’s true that the script is an original conception by script writer Derek Kolstad, the spark that grew into the flame that is John Wick can be found buried deep within the trivia section of the John Wick IMDB page:

“The story is loosely inspired by an incident in Texas involving former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, who wrote Lone Survivor, about his fire-team's ordeal during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan in 2005. Luttrell was given a yellow labrador puppy, whom he named DASY, after the members of his fireteam.

On April 1, 2009, at about 1:00 a.m., Luttrell was awakened by a gunshot, and saw four men drive away. DASY was dead in his yard from a gunshot wound. He armed himself with two 9 mm Beretta pistols and chased the men through four counties in his truck until police apprehended them. They taunted Luttrell, threatened to kill him, and indicated no remorse for their actions. They were later sentenced for animal cruelty. Luttrell stated later, "I spared them, because I've killed enough people already."

So yes, it would appear that John Wick is mostly a fabrication, but there’s a hint of truth behind every story that’s make belief!

Ian Fleming Kept Fantasy Grounded in Reality

Now that Apple and Amazon are fighting for distribution rights to the James Bond franchise, it’s clear that Ian Fleming’s legacy is as rock solid today as it ever was. The author was adored by his fans for creating compelling fiction that had us lost in a world of spies and international intrigue, all while allowing us to believe that the fantastical plots were entirely possible. Just how did he do it? From an essay entitled “How to Write a Thriller,” which appeared in the May 1963 issue of Books and Bookmen, Fleming let us know in his own words:

“My plots are fantastic, while being often based upon truth. They go wildly beyond the probable but not, I think, beyond the possible. . . . Even so, they would stick in the gullet of the reader and make him throw the book angrily aside—for a reader particularly hates feeling he is being hoaxed—but for two further technical devices, if you like to call them that. First of all, the aforesaid speed of the narrative, which hustles the reader quickly beyond each danger point of mockery and, secondly, the constant use of familiar household names and objects which reassure him that he and the writer have still got their feet on the ground. This is where the real names of things come in useful. A Ronson lighter, a 4.5 litre Bentley with an Amherst-Villiers supercharger (please note the solid exactitude), the Ritz Hotel in London, the 21 Club in New York, the exact names of flora and fauna, even James Bond’s Sea Island cotton shirts with short sleeves. All these details are points de repère to comfort and reassure the reader on his journey into fantastic adventure.”

What’s To Come of Deadpool

Now that Disney is one step closer to world dominance thanks to their acquisition of Fox, and now that Deadpool has been officially announced as part of the plans for the MCU Phase 5, fans have a lot to wonder. For starters, the kind of language commonly associated with the Merc With a Mouth isn’t exactly Disney appropriate. But if dumbed down for the larger audience and to meet the standards for the rest of the MCU’s offerings, will some of the magic from the first two films be lost?

While promoting Hobbes & Shaw, his latest offering, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch had this to say on the matter: “It’s rated R so that’s not necessarily the [MCU] brand but he doesn’t necessarily need to be R and [Disney] don’t necessarily need to only make PG-13 movies,” Leitch told Yahoo Movies UK. “I think we’ll find a happy ground.”

Leitch isn’t the only one weighing in on the R-rated raunchiness of Deadpool’s antics. Back in February Disney CEO Bob Eiger said “We see that there is certainly popularity amongst Marvel fans for the R-rated Deadpool films,” and, “We’re going to continue in that business and there might be room for more of that.”

Clearly, only time will tell what’s to come of the foul-mouthed mercenary and his ragtag group of friends, but one way or another we’re definitely looking forward to seeing Deadpool reunite with the rest of his MCU family.

Action Packed Movies and the Books They’re Based on

2019 and 2020 are set to be great years for action movies, and some of the most anticipated releases are actually based on some thrilling, critically acclaimed books. Here are two of the films we can’t wait to see, and the books they’re based on.

Scheduled for release in August this year, The Informer is set to be a thrill from start to finish. Starring Rosamund Pike, Joel Kinnaman, Clive Owen, and several notable others, the NYC set story actually takes its inspiration from 3 Seconds by Anders Roslund & Borge Hellström, a Swedish duo. Originally set in Stockholm, with scenes in Denmark and Poland, the book is a Scandinavian crime thriller that switches between several characters including a police detective, a criminal who has become a double agent, and a public prosecutor.

Despite some production delays pushing its release date up to 2020, Greyhound is set to be nothing short of epic. The wartime drama will star Tom Hanks and Elisabeth Shue, and while it’ll definitely tug at your heartstrings it also promises action packed battle scenes and heroics. Based on The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester, which has actually been adapted in the past, it tells the tale of U.S. Navy captain Commander Krause, who is caught in the events of World War II during the Battle of the Atlantic. Krause is forced to battle not just enemy forces, but his own past and insecurities.

Interesting Facts About The Da Vinci Code

It’s one of the best selling novels of all time, thanks in part to a feature film adaptation starring Tom Hanks. Here are three interesting facts about The Da Vinci Code that you may not have known.

It spawned an entire industry of books trying to debunk it. Although Dan Brown claims it’s based on factual history, The Da Vinci Code remains widely considered as a work of fiction, which makes the fact that there have been several books written to debunk it absolutely fascinating. Both religious scholars and historians have put out text after text taking issue with Dan Brown’s telling of the Sangreal.

It was so popular that it even boosted sales for Dan Brown’s other books. The success of 2003’s The Da Vinci Code was nothing short of monumental. So monumental, in fact, that in 2004 all four of Dan Brown’s novels made it to The New York Times bestseller list. In the same week. To date, The Da Vinci Code has sold an estimated 80 million copies and ranks among the 10 top selling novels of all time.

It actually spawned a video game. Difficult as it may be to believe, The Da Vinci Code managed to inspire a video game in 2006 that was released for the PS2, XBox, and PC. The game consisted mostly of puzzles and exploring a 3D environment, with the occasional bit of combat.
